Jam Roly Poly Recipe
Introduction
Jam Roly Poly is a classic British dessert that has been enjoyed for generations. It is a sweet treat that is made from a simple sponge dough that is rolled up with jam and steamed. This dessert is easy to make and is perfect for any occasion.Ingredients
- 225g self-raising flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 50g butter
- 125ml milk
- 4 tbsp strawberry jam
- 1 tbsp caster sugar
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the oven
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4.Step 2: Make the dough
In a large mixing bowl, sift in the self-raising flour and salt. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add the milk and mix until a soft dough forms.Step 3: Roll out the dough
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle shape, about 1cm thick.Step 4: Add the jam
Spread the strawberry jam evenly over the dough, leaving a 1cm border around the edges.Step 5: Roll up the dough
Starting from one of the long sides, roll up the dough tightly, like a Swiss roll. Pinch the edges together to seal.Step 6: Wrap in foil
Wrap the dough in a sheet of foil, making sure to seal the ends.Step 7: Steam the pudding
Place the foil-wrapped pudding into a steamer and steam for 1 hour and 30 minutes.Step 8: Bake in the oven
Remove the pudding from the steamer and carefully unwrap it from the foil. Place the pudding onto a baking tray and sprinkle with caster sugar. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.Step 9: Serve
Serve the Jam Roly Poly hot, either on its own or with custard.Nutrition
