Instructions
Follow these simple instructions to make your own wheaten bread:- Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan)/Gas Mark 6.
- In a large bowl, mix together the wholemeal flour, porridge oats, bicarbonate of soda, and salt.
- Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- If using the optional ingredients, add them to the mixture now.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk.
- Pour the egg and buttermilk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix well to form a dough.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few minutes until smooth.
- Shape the dough into a round and place it on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
- Use a sharp knife to score a deep cross into the top of the bread.
- Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- To check if the bread is cooked, tap the bottom of the bread. If it sounds hollow, it is cooked.
- Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack.
- Slice and serve the bread as desired.
